I recently bought this for my 6 year old daughter. It explains in detail an very clearly what the notes are an how to read them. We brought it to her drum lesson tonight an he said the book was excellent in general an especially for her age. He said it clearly explains the basics!! go me!! lolI would recommend this book for sure!

Very nice book but I wish the Dvd was instructional! It just plays songs you can drum along to.

It's absolutely necessary to use this before the drum set course, but it is not as easy as implied. It really rushes the student along.

Great book. I use it for my 8 year old student. The only thing I don't like about it is that it's not clear on some things. I'm not sure when it says "improvise" but yet still has a rhythm marked out for students to follow. Another thing that is unclear is when it wants students to use two or more sound sources. What if we are using just a snare drum? In that case I had him use the rim. Either way, a great tool to use to teach beginners.

Our son is 7 years old and wants to learn how to play the drums. I thought this would be a great book (I did look inside the book through Amazon's viewer) and it looked great. The problem is the CD, it's horrible. The whole point in having a CD along with the book is so the kid can hear what his lesson is suppose to sound like. The stuff on the CD isn't even drums, it's a whole variety of other instruments! In addition to this set we also got Carmen Appice's Realistic Rock for Kids, which also comes with a CD, and we love that one. Carmine actually narrates the book and takes the kids lesson by lesson like he was sitting right there with them. He is also playing the lessons ON THE DRUMS so the kids can hear what they are suppose to sound like. I recommend checking that one out instead of wasting your money on this one.

I'm a professional drum/percussion teacher, and I've tried this book with a few of my younger students (age 5-6) with mixed results. On the one hand, the presentation is good for that age group. I like the way it subversively introduces multi-limb coordination into the clapping and stomping games. I like that there is singing along (there could be more of that) and the musical accompaniment is appropriate for the age group. But, many of the exercises are just too hard, and the tempos one the accompaniment CD are too fast for kids at this level. I found myself telling the students to not listen to the CD and play the exercises slower. That kills a lot of the fun. I suspect that if you tried this with a child who has natural talent for rhythm, it might work fine. But, for the average child this age, there is too much that's too hard.

This book was perfect for our beginning drummer who couldn't even clap in rhythm. The CD contains orchestrations, with which the drummer is expected to play along. This is the whole goal of drumming -- to play with an ensemble. It makes the kids learn to feel the beat. Yes, it was hard for our rhythmically-challenged youngster. But it worked!

I felt the fictional location of this book ran to true to the feel of the air and the smell of the sea, and the song of the birds of a true sea coastline village. But the lives of the characters are what stayed with me after I finished the book. I imagined the women and men as they resumed their lives after knowledge of the past and present collided. Although fiction, it reminded me that everyone has a story, that lies and misdirection often are done with the best of intentions and that humans are amazing in their ability love and forgive and relearn how to love. I would recommend this book to every woman, married or not who feels they have let someone else steer their rudder and are reeling from that, even as they know that is what they originally wanted.

Tough book to rate...many aspects are very appealing. A sense of place--the island. An iconic center to the story--the mermaid chair. A bit of a mystery--what caused the death of Jessie's father AND why does Nelle keep chopping off her fingers. A romance--Hugh or Tom/ Tom or Hugh/ repeat...
OK--now my hesitation. At the heart of this book is a woman experiencing a mid-life crisis. The early description of Jessie's and Hugh's marriage is idyllic. Frankly, who wouldn't want to be in such a relationship?When Jessie is called to the coastal island, where she grew up, she goes to find out why her mother descended into a state of insanity and self-mutilated. No sooner does she set about figuring that out than she encounters a monk (OK--a monk in training) at the monastery on the island. And a lightening bolt of instant attraction shoots through her. Were that me...let's just say I don't think being sexually attracted to a monk while I am in the midst of a deep crisis involving my mother would be my response. But, then the novel would have been much shorter.So, Jessie experiences a mid-life crisis. Read the book for more details.
Just don't expect to walk away with either of these reactions: 1) oh, sure--that could absolutely happen to me; OR 2) I liked this book better than Secret Life of Bees.
Because I didn't--I still like Secret Life of Bees.

I didn't expect much after reading other reviews but for $1.99 I gave it a shot. I really wanted to like this book but I did not like or sympathize with the main character at all! I found her extremely selfish and narcissistic. Her point of the trip to the island was to take care of her seemingly mentally ill mother and she then forgets all about that to engage in an affair with a monk that she just met and immediately fell in love with! So hokey. I enjoyed the parts of the story that centered around her mother and eclectic circle of friends and also agree that the affair was totally unnecessary or that she should have used that attraction to make her realize how she needed to work on saving the good marriage she had to a really good guy. I was really hoping that Hugh wouldn't take her back. The author made it seem like he derserved being cheated on and that the main character found herself so he really benefited from the affair as well. Don't get me started on how Whit was so quick to fall immediately in love and forget his commitment. I have said enough.

The book seemed to get bogged down at times. As if the author didn't know where to go, so we got some more descriptive text about the island, or Hepzibahs head wraps. I was very surprised, that the main character, after telling us about the blame she shouldered for her Father's death, didn't tell her Mother about it when the big ridiculous end came and all was revealed about how her Father met his end and why. It was if the author had grown tired of her own writing and just wanted to get it over with. I didn't buy the ending at all.

In a way that no other work has this novel started my own personal journey of discovery of where my life has been, is now, and perhaps where it will go from here. It's a journey just begun so I've yet to see what insights I glean but am thankful that the choice of this work for a casual weekend read has turned into so much more. Reading Jessie's thoughts has made me look at my 63 years and the struggles I face now in a new and enlightening way. I expect to discover things both difficult and exciting as I "travel". Well worth reading.

I loved this book because it contained such a mixture of fascinating characters. Clever tangles threading to form a rich tapestry of emotions, Complex relationships, each relating to the other in some way. I wanted to be there to watch it all unfold, to try and understand why the mother felt impelled to chop off her fingers, how the daughter felt falling in love with a monk, to watch the birds in their sanctuary and smell the sea air. I wanted a long lasting friendship with the colourful characters who swam on the beach together. Sue Monk Kidd is a masterful story writer with a huge ability to beckon the reader to fall into her book, be painted with the colours of her words, and feel sorry when the last page is turned. Such a great story. I have read it twice and will read it again and again.

Great book! Love the way Sue Monk Kidd writes. Could LIVE in her stories. This is such a far cry from what I expected, I was really pleased and hope to read more by this author. You could smell the ocean, feel the breeze...the paint....she's a very sensual, tactile writer, and romantic. But this is no Harlequin romance. Is it?? Gosh I hope not! If so, Harlequin has grown up.

I did not think the book was particularly good. The story was OK, not great. Midlife crisis, blah, blah, blah. Why did the brilliant psychiatrist husband not notice his wife was troubled? The writer was so lost in descriptive details of nature (which I usually like) it slowed the progress of the story to a crawl. The two most interesting and fun characters were the two old friends. Further, the author wrote in first person, but was also able to write in the first person about what was going on in the monk's head, a literary trick which in my opinion did not work. It was difficult for our book group to find much to discuss or debate about the book.

Love can be starting you in the face, but sometimes you need to take wrong turns before you realize it. A beautiful story showing the pain of first love, or what can be perceived as love. A very goid, well written story and I would definitely recommend it.

Oh this is the very best Amish story I have ever read. I love reading about the Amish community and their love for God. All Amish stories are clean and leave the reader happy. Thank you Ms Schrock, please give us more of the same.

I really enjoyed reading this book I always enjoy reading Hannah Schrock books this was a great if had a little of everything sadness, happiness a great read.

I love to read Hannah Schrock’s books. They always leave me with a warm feeling in my heart and a smile on my face. In this particular book, Naomi is a very confused young lady with the Amish clock ticking. If she doesn’t marry soon, she will be considered a spinster in the eyes of her community. Finding just the right match is proving to be out of her line of sight unfortunately. The story takes several unexpected turns before she finally sees her dream man. It’s a great story and I think any avid reader of Amish stories will love reading this book.

ANOTHER GOOD BOOK BY MY FAVORITE AMISH AUTHOR..I HAVE YET TO READ A BORING BOOK BY HANNAH SCHROCK,AND I HAVE READ A LOT OF THEM..GOOD JOB.....

We found Hong Kong to be an exciting city with many attractions. It's people are energetic and largely define the city.As for the travel guide, I found it only adequate. I had hoped that it would be an up-to-date guide to the culture and not just the scenery. I laughed when I saw how few pages were devoted to "Survival" stuff, and near the back of the book. I thought the book could be briefer and better focused on the "seldom traveler." Pages were filled with COC pamphlet descriptions, leading to a terribly confused index and, finally, a disappointing, marginal map.

pointed out the sights. Great fornavigation when internet was not availible, great for trip planning . not great for specific merchant or resteraunt recommendations. overall helpful, solid book for our trip to Hong Kong last month 10/18

I've been finding Lonely Planet a bit erratic recently, but the Hong Kong guide seems to be back to their best standard.

I have this book and it has helped me plan my vacation to Hong Kong. I have a Lonely Plant Thailand Book as well, and both have helped greatly in planning my Thailand/Hong Kong 10 Year Wedding Anniversary Vacation.

This guide has some great information. However, for some reason (and maybe it is just me), I found the index in the back not particularly helpful. I used the DK Eyewitness Top Ten guide or the Internet to figure out what to see and where it was located, then used the city/area sections in Lonely Planet to find the sight and get more information. The sections in the back on history, culture, art, etc. are very informative.

Full of fantastic recommendations for a trip to Hong Kong. Used to plan the trip and as a daily guide on the ground.

Well set out with numerous options for each of the many areas one can visit. At the end of each subsection the book suggests a walk which incorporates these sites with restaurants on the way.

I've been to Hong Kong before, but it's been a few years. This helped update me and filled in some gaps in terms of what to see and where to go that made my vacation terrific.

Has some useful information and devoid of index. The entire book could have been reduced from 263 pages to a booklet of about 30 pages and sold at a considerably lower price. I am amazed at the amount of junk in wellness books, especially the multitude of worthless recipes.

Great information on naturally lowering your blood pressure. If you are taking a handful of blood pressure pills every day, and are always feeling extremely fatigued, please read this book. It's very helpful. I would also recommend "The Magnesium Solution". Magnesium appears to be very important in keeping hypertension at bay.

Good book, I am using many of the recommedations, and have some good results. My big problem is stress, last week on vacation Blood pressure was much better. Job is the problem with 50% of the blood pressure problem. I now know that for a fact and this book cannot correct that problem. But it has helped.

This book has been more helpful to me than my last four doctors combined.

Gives basic information of value, but nothing new nor any miracle cures. I learned from another source about the wonders of celery in lowering BP, and this information was not in this book. It's ok reading, but no more than that.

A final thought: the main media organ of deniers these days is the Internet. There is still scope for a detailed analysis of the content and impact of these hate pages. The authors have written a valuable book, but the debate (like it or not) will go on.

This book is the most convincing refutation that I've seen of the claim that there was no systematic Nazi plan to murder Europe's Jews, and the most penetrating analysis of why some people make that claim. Shermer and Grobman are to be commended for dealing with the subject from the standpoint of historiography, avoiding the shrill ad hominem arguments that are, alas, all too frequent in this sensitive area, and for making an attempt to figure out exactly why people believe what they do. Their analysis of David Irving is especially enlightening: Irving is certainly an intelligent man, and doesn't appear to be a vicious anti-Semite. The authors' explanation of how this otherwise sensible historian was led down the garden path by the ex-Nazi "in crowd" is one of the most interesting, and thoroughly convincing parts of the book.

Being an Israeli Jew, living in a society that reveres the memory of the Holocaust and having partaken in an education system that teaches the details of the Holocaust in detail, there was something missing.Having encountered Holocaust deniers on the internet and hearing their arguments I simply had no tools to counter their points. It wasn't that I didn't know enough details (though I did lack some of that), it wasn't that I wasn't exposed to experiences that led me to believe wholeheartedly that the Holocaust happened (you can't get better than first hand testimonies from actual survivors).What I lacked was an understanding of how History is established - how do we know what we know about History. The Holocaust is THE case study for how faulty evidence handling and faulty reasoning motivated by ideology can lead to denial whereas sound reasoning and historical analysis can lead to true fact finding.It's not enough to know that the Holocaust happened - one needs to know how we know. A must read.

"Denying History" is best seen as a case study of historiography; the authors' take on the issue of defining the difference between history, revision, and denial. Shermer and Grobman argue that there is a very real difference between revisionism and denial, and that, despite arguments to the contrary, Holocaust deniers' are engaged in exactly that - denial.The book gets into many of the relevant issues of historiography; bias, what are facts, the interpretation of facts, etc. and applies it to Holocaust denial. First the authors' discuss the issue of historiography in their introduction, "Who Speaks for the Past," and in Chapter 2, "The Noble Dream: How We Know Anything Happened in History." The next two chapters address who the deniers are, and why they say the Holocaust never happened - this gets into motivation and bias. Chapter 5 then addresses, "the flaws, fallacies and failings in the Denier's Arguments."The next three chapters are spent addressing denier arguments and "facts" and demonstrating how and why their "facts" do not fit into a rational historiography-based argument. Essentially Shermer and Grobman argue that the volume of data and the variety of sources overwhelmingly demonstrate the Holocaust was real; the sources all converge on a single conclusion. And the authors' are not just talking about the number of eye witness accounts, but also legal proceedings, archaeology, scientific and forensic evidence, and a variety of other historical documents from a wide variety of allied and even Nazi sources. As they point out, the deniers' discrediting of one eye witness account, or several, does not negate the volume of other eye witness accounts nor does it negate other types of evidence. Nor does their attempt at making an equivalency argument (the idea that what was done was no worse than what others did) negate the evidence.The authors' finish off the book with, "The Rape of History: Denial, Revision, and the Search for a True and Meaningful Past." This chapter has a brief review of other examples of denial, such as the Japanese and the rape of Nanking, and examples of legitimate revision, such as Martin Bernal's "Black Athena" among others. Essentially the authors' conclude that, "The difference between denial and revision is not in the extremity of the claim..., but in the purposeful distortion of the past for personal reasons...." (p. 241), and, "If there is no method of discriminating between true and false interpretations of the past, between history and pseudo-history, between revisionism and denial, then there is no point in even having a discipline of history." (p. 244)Of particular interest are Shermer's and Grobman's ten tests for denial (pp. 248-250):1. How reliable is the source of the claim?2. Has this source made other claims that were clearly exaggerated?3. Has another source verified the claim?4. How does the claim fit with what we know about the world and how it works?5. Has anyone, including and especially the claimant, gone out of the way to disprove the claim, or has only confirmatory evidence been sought?6. In the absence of clearly defined proof, does the preponderance of evidence converge on the claimant's conclusion or a different one?7. Is the claimant employing the accepted rules of reason and tools of research or only ones that lead to the desired conclusion?8. Has the claimant provided a different explanation for the observed phenomena rather than just denying the existing explanation?9. If the claimant has proffered a new explanation, does it account for as many phenomena as the old explanation does?10. Do the claimant's personal beliefs and biases drive the conclusions or vice versa?
