First, I think this is a very talented author who develops characters well and makes you care about them. She is clearly capable of creating imaginative storylines. My issue with this book is that there are too many storylines here. This is not one series. It is at least two, and squashing all of these ideas and characters in one story, made me want to throw up my hands. I'm fine with the demons and the demon fighter with a gift for languages. I'm even O.K. with the witch who makes a bargain with a demon.I don't know what to do with the side plot about psychic teen grifters, but I get that our hero needs a supporting cast. The author loses me when she throws in time-traveling old testament prophets, and at least one guardian angel. Everyone has secrets and the teen angst and hormones are thick on the ground, and because she has thrown too many plots into this stew, you begin to really notice the flaws and become less absorbed in the story. I suppose teenagers with ADD would find this a great weekly series on the CW, as another reviewer said. This is a worthy author, who deserves a really strong editor - with a red pen, and a multi-series contract.
When I began reading this, I had few expectations that it would be any good, or that I'd even finish it. The story synopsis made it seem only sightly more appealing than the other Kindle First options for June, but I'm a sucker for a free book. I figured that if I didn't like the book, I'd put it down, no money out. Frankly, I expected bad writing. (For some reason, stories involving demons, wizards, etc., that are set in contemporary times seem to suffer from a breeziness that I suspect the author intends to indicate cleverness (or sophistication?). I find that style embarrassing and annoying.) However, after getting just a few pages into this book, I was pleasantly surprised that that writing was workmanlike, unpretentious, and did a good job of telling the story without getting in the way. The story-telling was well-paced and the plot held my attention throughout. The dialog was competent. The characters were interesting. I'll look forward to reading the second book when it comes out. I'll even pay for it.
Actual Rating 2.5I've had this book for a while now on my kindle, I honestly have no idea when I got it, how I got it, or if anyone gave it to me. I decided to read it though because that is the goal of #beatthebacklist. Reading this book took a lot out of me. Honestly, while I did like the main character everyone around him annoyed me. This is honestly because of the whole 'Everyone knows vital information but are going to lie and not share until the last minute but you still need to trust me' trope that most YA authors seem to be using. I know why authors use it because it's the easiest way to keep readers in the dark and have a huge twist at the end. I will admit I liked the twist, but I saw it coming a mile away which made the secrets even more annoying.I don't mind love triangles if done right then it can really boost the story, but what happens if I like neither of the female love interests? One of them had serious mood swings, it was like riding a weird roller coaster that you can see the tracks of. Her backstory is pretty sad, and I would have sympathized with her had Marks not tried so hard to make her just the complete opposite of the other love interest, who was just so needy and bland that I honestly cannot remember her name (Jessica, Rebecca something that ended in A?).The plot was pretty interesting despite all these flaws though. Marks did her research on Demon and Angel lore which made some parts really interesting. The beginning of the book was really interesting and if she had expanded upon Aidan's homelessness, his loneliness and his need to protect his sister without those group of paranormal investigators I may have liked the book more. This is a trilogy but I am extremely hesitant to continue. I'll have to think about it more.
Too often I force my way through a book, or worse part of a book and end up writing a bad review. I had begun to think I was being too critical, that I was expecting too much of authors and then I read this book. It reminded me that despite all the mediocre (and I'm being kind when I use that word) books published, there are still some very good, well written young adult novels on the market, and this is by far one of the best.First, there was good character development. I didn't like all the main characters but then, if I had, it would have been boring. Second, there's a good story here and it built slowly but steadily to a conclusion that was action packed and exciting. Toward the end, I couldn't put it down despite the late hour. And even though it was book 1, it had an ending, not like one of this cheap, "to be continued" penny novels.And on top of everything, it was beautifully written. I loved reading it, not just for the story but for the words. Buy this book. Read it. You will enjoy it.
