Amazing read! Khalidi does an impeccable job of depicting what life was like for Lebanon under the Ottoman Empire. Her perspective as an educated woman is very interesting and provides a lens that no one could understand unless he or she were in her position.

This book provides unique insight into the struggle of Arab women for a political voice. Anbara's writings illustrate the extent to which the emancipation of Arab women is intertwined with ending occupation and colonial rule. The memoir also shows that Muslim women's demand for their rights occurred independent of Western influence. Memoirs of an Early Arab Feminist is a must-read for students of modern Middle East history and Women Studies.

First published in Arabic in 1978. Now, in 2013, finally available in English in a beautifully fluid translation. Centered on Beirut/Lebanon and Jerusalem/Palestine; Egypt & Syria; and the role of the colonial powers (the Ottoman empire, France & Britain). Covers the epic events of the late 1800s through 1948 to the 1970s. On this dark political canvas, the author paints a very personal picture, powerful, upbeat and optimistic, of family life, cultural change, the rise of Arab nationalism and Arab feminism. Full of revelations, even to those who know the region. A pleasure to read.

A very interesting and well-researched book. The author is a physician who conducts studies on identical twins, which allows him to try different treatments on people with exactly the same genes and compare the results. The book is about how your gut microbes contribute to your health, and how your diet affects your gut microbes. My only quibble with this book is he is too quick to dismiss studies that yield intriguing results but aren't as rigorous as he would like - for instance he doesn't accept epidemiological studies as valid, because indeed such studies can seem to show false correlations, but there are some subjects that it is impossible/unethical to test directly on humans. So as a result he refers to mouse and rat studies rather often. The result is he dismisses health issues that may be valid, such as the effect of nightshade vegetables on some people, and concerns about A2 milk. As is common with doctors, he dismisses concerns that are not statistically significant - but we are all individuals, and some of us may not fit neatly into statistical models. Nevertheless, for the vast majority of us, this book will be illuminating and helpful, whether you are trying to lose weight, solve digestive issues, or simply improve your health.

One of the best books I have read. I have done a lot of my own research whenever new diets come out and most of what this author discusses is information I have come across. The author condenses the information and pulls it all together to make it more understandable. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and found myself learning new things and understanding why most diets do not work; they are as individual as people-- what works for some, does not work for others.I have also been following the latest developments on the importance of our gut microbes and this book helps clarify, and put into perspective a new way of looking at ourselves, our nutrition requirements and our relationship to food.What I liked most about this book is the fact the author is straight-forward and admits that we do not have all of the answers. He is seeking the truth just like everyone else so he does not make any outlandish claims. He is a professor and most of his knowledge is from other studies and his own research with twins. The book even has references that he cites which I appreciate because I like to follow-up with information I find interesting.

The information about gut bacteria has been available for a while. This book does a good job of explaining the scientific resarch and summarizing it's findings. It also has good practical information on what we can do to improve our health.

This book provided so much information, without confusion. I read a lot about health, eating and exercise. This is definitely one of the best books I've found.

Finally a book about food that doesn’t give you some simplified, one-rule solution that will make you thin and healthy—but instead feeds you with knowledge, never shying away from pointing out potential weaknesses of invoked studies and experiments.

A must have book, which gives very readable and fascinating details about the very latest research on diet, food, genetics and our gut microbes. It explains why different diets work for different people.

This book was interesting and informative, and it confirmed much of what I already suspected about current food/diet recommendations. Great read!

This book is fantastic. I am only in chapter 3, but I have learned so much in those three chapters. It's a page-turner and really makes you reconsider the common conventions surrounding diets.

Easy to make, but as far as taste go, you "get what you pay for" -- canned meals = so so dinners.Definitely great for first time college kids getting out on their own and want to try to cook for themselves!

I bought this cook book and 2 others like it for my 20 something young sons for Christmas. They were constantly calling me asking for recipes and cooking advice so I thought I would give them some cookbooks. These covered board books spell out every recipe in language a clueless teenager should be able to understand. Plus they are easy to wipe clean. There a pictures of everything and a grocery shopping list to help. The recipes are simple, easy and seems like they would fill up a hungry college student. None of the recipes require weird spices, foods or utensils --they are all user/student friendly. My sons has successfully tried a few of the recipes and didn't burn anything down.I also bought a Man and A Tailgate plan for my sports nut.

I bought this for my gentleman friend (age 56) who cooks meat on the grill but not much else. He was ecstatic. I was afraid he might be offended/insulted by the toddler style cardboard pages, but he was pleased that he could throw it (literally) in his truck and take it into the grocery store on his way home from work without destroying it. The food is surprisingly good and only requires the meat department and canned goods aisles, nothing else. Does not require any kitchen equipment other than pots and pans. Not exactly haute cuisine, but for someone who wants something other than drive through burgers and pizza delivery for dinner once in a while and doesn't want to spend forever trying to buy ingredients and spices and cook, this is an excellent book.

My cousin, who is a chef recommended this to me. The book's recipes center around using canned ham, chicken, fish, beans, veggies, chili, fruit, beer and SpaghettiOs. SpaghettiOs you say? Believe it or not each can has 10 gms of protein, only 5 gms of fat and the sauce is from tomato puree which is a rich source of lycopene. Who knew? I'll be making one of the SpaghettiO recipes today with some ground beef, shredded cheese and a can of veggies the only things being added. These recipes are simple, use common ingredients and the instructions, both written and visual are great. The other nice thing is that at the end of the instructions the author gives a breakdown of each serving (calories, protein, fat, fiber etc). Canned foods store a long time and can be used so many different ways as the book suggests. I'll now be watching for canned good sales at the supermarket and stocking up. Highly recommended!

I bought this as a gift for my nephew and i'm glad i did. Its a great starter book for a young man that is new to cooking. The ingredients are simple, easy to find, and accessible to most. Its not a gourmet cook book by any means, but its a good book to help a young person get more comfortable with being in the kitchen and fending for themselves. I can see this book as being perfect for a teenager or a college kid making meals for themselves. I'm sure after mastering these recipes a person would probably graduate to more complicated and interesting dishes, and i think that this book provides that confidence and stepping stone to get there. Not that it ventures into that territory, but once a person gains that confidence that they can actually cook something other than a hot pocket that actually provides decent nutrition and sustenance such as the things in this book, they will be more willing to branch out to other great meals/recipes. Bottom line, this book is a great start for some one new to cooking, or looking for easy, less complicated meals that are simple to make.I also bought the "Second Helping" follow up to this book at the same time and HIGHLY recommend it. I'm not saying that this book is bad, but I think the recipes in the 2nd Helping book are allot better and a little more appealing to my tastes. I highly recommend buying them in a pair. That is what i did. These books are STURDY. They come with those THICK pages like you would find in a kids book. So i'm sure you can prevent ruining the book with accidental splashes and spills, which fits right in a beginner.I might buy another set for myself just to get quick and easy ideas for myself.

I just ordered this book (got it next day (Sat) with prime membership though I did not pay for the faster shipping)as part of a useful gag gift for a really good friend. He is single, lives alone and does not know how to cook. He's over at my place for food all the time so I thought this would be a funny part of his gift this year. The book is great. It has large cardboard pages (like toddler books) and pictures of ingredients in a fashion of 'picture of can of soup' + 'picture of noodles' + 'picture of cheese' = 'picture of final product'. Then a few paragraphs of the steps with cooking instructions. Also some helpful blurbs tossed in like 'only you can prevent kitchen fires!' Its so basic and funny, it really is what the title describes. For the gift hes going to be getting cans of food and other nonperishable food items, all wrapped separately then I will give him the book last. :D
