Montgomery started the Choose Your Own Adventure series with 'The Abominable Snowman.' Each book is written in the second-person and you play the role of the main character. Readers are given choices and decide on a course by turning to different pages. Each book has many possible endings and side stories, some with over 100 variations. About the Author
R. A. MONTGOMERY attended Hopkins Grammar School, Williston-Northampton School and Williams College where he graduated in 1958. He pursued graduate studies in Religion and Economics at Yale and NYU. Montgomery was an adventurer all his life, climbing mountains in the Himalaya, skiing throughout Europe and scuba-diving wherever he could. His interested included education, macro-economics, geo-politics, mythology, history, mystery novels and music. He wrote his first interactive book, Journey Under the Sea, in 1976 and published it under the series name The Adventures of You. A few years later Bantam Books bought this book and gave Montgomery a contract for five more, to inaugurate their new children s publishing division. Bantam renamed the series Choose Your Own Adventure and a publishing phenomenon was born. The series has sold more than 260 million copies in over 40 languages. He was married to the writer Shannon Gilligan. Montgomery died in November 2014, only two months after his last book was published.

These are books in a series that I read when I was a kid. They are great because they give the reader a bit more involvement with what they are reading, which is key for young readers who are still developing an interest in reading. It was for that reason that I bought this set to give to a friend's son who was struggling with his reading (reading at a 3rd grade level, but the boy is in 6th grade). These books contributed to sparking more interest in reading for him and helped to bring his skill level up to the appropriate level.UPDATE 7/17/2018I'm happy to report that my friend's son was able to catch up with his reading at school and my friend thanked me profusely for buying these books for his son. Between these books, the efforts of the parents and the teachers - and of course, the efforts of the son - the son was able to pass the 6th grade. He will start 7th grade in the fall, without issues with his reading level anymore (hopefully).
Wrote a more detailed review for the second set. Bought both to help get my kids doing more non-required reading. In the 80s the COYA books helped develop my lifelong love of reading and they are doing the same for my two boys (ages 8 and 11). I bought both sets for x-mas presents and they have done more non-required reading over winter break than the rest of the year combined.
We have been looking for these books for some time now. When we found them on here we were so excited. We are a homeschool family and my husband and I wanted our children to be able to experience these books like we have. Exactly like they use to be :)
Bought for 9 yo who gets bored w reading very quickly. Because story/endings can be relatively short, he is able to complete them & is interested to go back & try different choices/endings. I remember these from my own childhood & am happy to see him enjoying reading them.
My son loves these books! He spends more time reading than playing on electronics and that is worth mentioning. Highly recommended for kids who don’t enjoy reading. It will turn their hesitation and struggles into enjoyment and fascination.
Great set of books. I ranted about these books to my 9 year old about how much I enjoyed reading these. Once they came it we sat down and both read the books and made decisions on how to proceed. It was a great experience I could share with my daughter.
Great bargain! I got these to use at the tutoring center I work at. I was looking for books that would encourage the kids to read but not be overwhelming. This set worked great!
