This book has been recommended a lot but I wasn't sure. However, I read it and really liked it,.The world and culture building are very good. Liam is a wounded, smart, and wonderful hero. Ondry turns out to be pretty amazing as well. The details of Liam's submissive nature woven in with the culture of this alien world are well done and engaging.Even though they have very different bodies, our heroes are able to connect in all sorts of powerful ways. The plot is good and the love story a slow burn that is worth the wait. And yes, there is tail sex but really if you had a tail???I am sad that the next books in the series stay with this same couple. I like to leave them fully happy and would love to see another couple but this is a good book and I really enjoyed it.
I am utterly furious at Loose Id for mishandling this masterpiece of a story. Packaged with a flippant title and a stereotypical beefcake cover, I have no doubt that many people have passed over this rare gem. It is a profoundly thoughtful examination of both alien and human culture and relationships along the lines of China Mieville's Embassytown or Octavia Butler's Dawn (The Xenogenesis Trilogy Book 1). I am not tossing this praise lightly; this story deserves a place on every science fiction fan's shelf. That some people might dismiss it due to Loose Id's terrible editorial decision to publish and market it as simple erotica is unforgivable. Though this and the two sequels contain numerous sexual scenes, I would hesitate to even call them strictly erotic; rather than mere titillation, said content is beautifully woven into the more philosophical and emotionally poignant aspects of the story. The main characters' relationship is intimate and complex and is never presented for mere spectacle.Excepting readers who are uncomfortable with sexual content, I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone interested in thought-provoking and meditative science fiction.
While this book seemed to describe a pretty healthy D/s relationship within a sci fi context, there were a couple times that Gala seemed to be intimating that BDSM is taboo in human sexuality. While it’s certainly not mainstream, it’s probably one of the better accepted kinks. It doesn’t seem very sex friendly for an author to present kink as taboo. Perhaps this wasn’t the intention, but it made me uncomfortable, so I couldn’t give this more than three stars. I do generally like this author, though, so I will give the next book a chance. The proofreading was good, with only a couple errors that I caught.
I didn't like it at all, the author has alot of books that are decently rated so I got excited because this is right up my alley but I just couldn't do it. The writing is crazy botched. Their wasn't a time line. First it's day to day and than halfway thruogh the book the main character let's it drop that it's been five years but at no point was there any indication time had elapsed and it's horribly repetitive. The author just repeats the second sentence over and over about how the language was hard. Most of the book was the character trying to describe and get another character to understand rape. And than it's over out of nowhere. They're like hey I gotta go trading, oh let's have sex instead, ok, sex is good. Book the end... Like wtf...
Claimings, Tails and Other Artifacts is a standalone by Lyn Gala. I read this for a group challenge and it was a new genre for me.I'm not quite sure how to review this. Liam is a human and a troubled soul. The story was confusing to me but once it unraveled, Ondry claimed Liam. In human terms it was a dominant claiming a submissive, although the manner in which it was done would never have worked on earth. It was told in a singular POV, Liam's.I was fascinated with the descriptions of the Rowndt - how they communicated, their expressions, words and coloring. It was difficult to understand but it was told from a human's perspective and Liam also had a difficult time understanding so it seemed to read in first person. The story was hard to follow. It was fairly technical with Liam and Ondry communicating to understand the customs of each world to come to an understanding as well as the unveiling of Liam's past baggage, which brought him to where he was today.Ultimately the plot was about the merging of two cultures to meet the needs of both Liam and Ondry. It was a quick and creative read.
Aliens, humans, and submissives oh my!I really like this book. Like, alot. I've been on the hunt for something besides contemporary MM because I need a bit of a change. I've read a few paranormal and scifi MM romances recently and i've loved every single one. This is no exception. The world building, the laws, the economics, the language, the characters...everything was so unique and it blew my mind. It took me a little bit to understand what was happening since this is the first book by Lyn Gala I have read so I don't know her writing style yet but once I figured it out I couldn't put it down. The premise is amazing. An alien culture that looks upon submissives as the greatest treasure they could ever have and a human submissive who gives his all to his master. Although incompatible sexually, they find a way to make their relationship work and honestly, I want more of Ondry and Liam.
I enjoyed this book a lot. It is a little drier than the others in the series but still good. This is a aciemce fiction novel with a romantic relationship.at the heart of it. There are elements of D/s, but filtered through alien psychology. There are sexual elements, based on the human viewpoint, but based on the alien view there aren't; they are intimacies. Read the boom, it is really fascinating how this plays out.The world not described in great detail, but to me it is vivid in the interactions that show the culture.Well worth the time and the money.
