K. Ancrum's debut is a fascinating study on how neglect, codependency, and mental illness can become a recipe for disaster--even if the parties involved are actually in love. The format is a breath of fresh air for me. I liked looking at the documents, doodles, and photos that appear in between chapters. I noticed that most of the multimedia elements, perhaps all, were from perspectives other than August. This is clever because August is a super unreliable narrator, skipping over and reframing events in a way that fits his world view, and the documents show us what is really going on. The best example of this is the "Do you like me?" note, which is visual/physical representation of Jack's feelings throughout the book. I thought it was really cool that the significance of the note isn't really unveiled till the end. Just as August realizes that a romantic spark existed between him and Jack the entire time, the reader learns that Jack has been thinking about it the entire time, too.I can't speak to how the ARC read, but the final product makes August and Jack's feelings explicit. There's no room for a nonqueer interpretation by the end of the book. It's worth clarifying that the romance is slow burn and subtle due to the unreliable narrator. While many LGBTIQ reads put romance front and center, THE WICKER KING's romance blossoms in the things the narrator leaves unsaid, the questions he won't answer, and the thoughts he tries very hard to ignore. The way the characters were developed is really informed by August's perspective as well. We learn EVERYTHING about Jack, but only get bits and pieces of the twins, Alex, and Gordie. Even Rina felt a little tough to grasp. I found this kind of storytelling effective, though YMMV if you prefer your YA reads to have tight knit squads. The dialogue felt natural to me, even when Jack was spouting hallucination-induced poetry. While I'm not sure if it's intentional, I interpreted THE WICKER KING's portrait of neglect and codependency as a commentary on some stories sweep parents out of the way to avoid inconveniencing the protagonist, and main characters spend their every breathing moment in the company of their friends. While those tropes make for fun stories indeed, in the real world that behavior is harmful. Ancrum just took those tropes to their natural conclusions.

WOW!!! I'm slightly broken and all sorts of scrambled. This unabashedly poignant book at times had me staring blankly, besot with raw confusion while other times overwhelmed by all manner of heart-constricting Feels. The Author's Note at the end of the book was Everything!! I may have cried more reading that amazing amalgamation of pure Love and Acceptance than anywhere within the story. The meat and potatoes were equal parts obsession and true Love. Unhealthy relationships of various forms and the mental health issues that are both Cause & Effect. The motivators were confounding most of the time but the Author's transparency in the end note clarified much of what had me nonplussed. On to the format: The chapters weren't really full-on chapters per se but more like snippets, still frames, a couple of texts, detention slips, and psychiatric reports...quite often it came off as disjointed which made immersing myself wholeheartedly in any given moment nearly impossible. The altered pictures lent a sense of odd tangibility to the story as well as charm to the unorthodox chapter format.Overall this book was weird (in a good way), confusing (in a confusing way 😀) and passionate (in both healthy and toxic ways). I highly recommend this read but BE WARNED: there are triggers abound and confusion aplenty which will probably lead you to either LOVE it or absolutely LOATHE it...I predict there will be very little fence straddling.Enjoy!

Oh my heart...this book mesmerized me. I tried as best I could to read it as slow as possible so that it would not end. It is different than books I usually read, a slow slope down into madness for the main characters. K. Ancrum beautifully tells a tale of this dip into insanity and failure of society’s adults to do anything, as well valiant efforts of friends to help in any way they can. I loved each character, even Peter, twin to the kinder Roger, who on the outside seems a little cruel and uncaring, but really isn’t; he just seems to guard his heart where Roger is willing to show his. This book should be read by any adult with a child they fear is suffering severe emotional issues and any youth that is battling with these fears. I am so glad to have read it and pass along the author’s message, if you are battling with mental illness, it is not your fault, and you are not alone.
