Review

"The chapters are particularly impressive, and show the depth of this subject...I found the scope of the book to be fascinating, because there was far more information in this book that I did not know, versus what I had already known. In fact, there were many medals mentioned that I had never even heard of before.""What I really like about the book are the full color pictures that complement the very well written text within...It is that level of attention to detail that makes this book special.""The book does a nice job of detailing out, item by item, the medals in the series, mintages, sales, and values. The author does a very nice job outlining the historical background of each issue and allows the reader to get to know the subjects of the medals.""Even for these series which the reader thinks he or she knows, Dennis Tucker seems to find many tidbits of information that makes you realize how little you know. I did not know all of the different finishes on the ATB five ounce medals that were available, either by design or by accident. As with the other sections, much more information about history and background is provided to put each coin in context.""Tucker really shines when he writes about the more esoteric issues, such as U.S. Mint silver and gold medals.""Reading about these issues piqued my interest so much that I [have begun] to search for some examples for my collection, immediately after typing and posting this review.""In summary, this book gets 5 Longacre stars. I recommend that anyone with even a passing interest in the topic pick up a copy....I am keeping my copy in a revered spot in my library." --Collectors Universe Message Board, U.S. Coin Forum, "Book Review--American Gold and Silver (Medals and Coins)," posted by forum member Longacre (March 20, 2016)"Now that this book has hit the market, will that lead to a surge in collecting interest in U.S. Mint issues such as the American Arts Medallions that were issued from 1980 to 1984, or the First Spouse gold bullion coins issued from 2007 through this year? That could definitely happen.""As readers of this lavishly illustrated catalog enjoy the contents, I expect a number of collectors will come to appreciate just how rare both the American Arts Medallions and the First Spouse gold bullion coins really are, especially when you consider the current prices at which they can be obtained.""If you collect any of the modern American gold and silver coins and medals by variety and date, it would be well worth your investment to pick up a copy of this book." --Numismatic News, "Hidden Scarcity in Modern U.S. Gold," by Patrick Heller (April 7, 2016)"Tucker's book is a tour de force....He worked closely with numerous staff from the U.S. Mint, especially its sculptor-engravers and medallic sculptors, for whom the author clearly has a lot of admiration and respect....fascinating....detailed, systematic, and gorgeously illustrated chapters....This book, a must-read and a must-have for anyone with an interest in modern U.S. gold and silver coins and medals, has a great number of unique strengths....remarkable amount of behind-the-scenes information....superb collection of photographs....superb coverage of U.S. Mint silver and gold medals....will delight anyone who appreciates beautiful medallic art....[The author] goes will beyond what most people will know about these coins, even if you are a serious collector who follows them closely....Tucker goes into much greater detail and includes coins that have, until now, been discussed only briefly in the numismatic press....Whether you are a newcomer looking for an introduction to modern U.S. coins and medals, or a seasoned collector or scholar with a deep interest in these topics, American Gold and Silver deserves a prominent place in your numismatic library. It will enhance not just what you know about these coins, and help you to be a more-well educated collector, but perhaps most importantly, it will enable you to enjoy these coins and medals even more than you already do and open up new areas which you may wish to collect." --Coin Week, "Coin Books-First Read: American Gold and Silver by Dennis Tucker" (April 2016)

From the Inside Flap

Every coin collector knows about the United States Mint's American Eagle bullion coins. But did you know that the Mint has produced more than 150 other collectible works of silver and gold bullion since the national Bicentennial in 1976? They include some of the most beautiful coins and medals ever engraved for the United States. Some were runaway best-sellers and made national headlines. Others are well-kept secrets. Many are sought by collectors and investors around the globe. Some are "sleepers" - underappreciated treasures with great potential waiting to be discovered. Now, award-winning author Dennis Tucker shares years of research and unique perspective in a colorful exploration of these amazing pieces of Americana. He takes you behind the scenes at the U.S. Treasury, into the engraving department of the U.S. Mint and the chambers of Congress, even to the White House, where questions about the nation's precious metals have been argued for generations. Inside you'll find a richly illustrated history of silver and gold in the coinage of colonial America and the United States. You'll see why silver and gold were difficult for the average American to acquire through most of our history. Learn about the American Arts gold medallion program of the early 1980s, and the U.S. Mint's recent American Buffalo, First Spouse, and America the Beautiful bullion programs. Bicentennial gold medals, the 2014 gold Kennedy half dollar, 1916-2016 centennial gold coins, silver Wildlife Refuge Service medals, the 9/11 national medal, and other important modern productions all are cataloged and described inside. Along the way Tucker shines light on a thousand people, places, and points in American history: military heroes and famous artists, awe-inspiring landmarks, fearless innovators, dreamers and doers.

Great book with lots of good text. I found the discussion of the first spouse series very interesting, but even better is the earlier discussion about the various political forces contributing to and opposing the issue of the commemorative coins and medallions. Really eye opening information. On the negative side, the quality of the color printing is not really good. The paper chosen is a heavy quality, but the quality of the printing is medium at best.It was also very interesting to compare photos and paintings of the presidential spouses versus the engraved images on the first spouse series of coins. It is clear that some of these coins are ugly not because the corresponding first spouse was ugly, no the job by the engraver was a poor one. The quality of the series seems to be very uneven. The most important lesson learned after spending hours studying the book: The US mint has produced an incredibly large variety of coins over the years. To many perhaps. One needs to watch carefully what the mint is doing. Some of their creations are really very beautiful, but that is not always the case.

Fantastic book highlighting the mint's work. Very photo heavy and loaded with interesting facts and historical references sure to entertain any coin collector or history fanatic.

It arrived appropriately.

My husband was happy with it.

Must have

Excellent book. Well written.

Great book. Amazon gets 1 star because it arrived damaged

Wow! This is very impressive book and when you read it you can tell that the author is passionate about the subject. What I like most about it is that it goes beyond the "Red Book" (formally known as A Guide Book of United States Coins) and identifies areas that not all collectors know about. There's the potential for lots of value discovery here for intrepid buyers looking for the next big thing. When one considers how much has been written about U.S. coins, it's remarkable that this hasn't been written already! Thankfully, Dennis has done a great job on this book and it would be of interest to those who like gold and silver bullion, U.S. coins, history (there are gorgeous, color photos throughout) and a lot more.As the back cover writes on many of the coins and medals covered, "some are 'sleepers' - underappreciated treasures with great potential waiting to be discovered." I'm glad that I was one of the first to buy this book, and I've already made some new additions to my collection based on the information that Dennis presents.Well done!
