This is a horror story. And it's the most chilling, goosebump-inducing kind. There is no blood. No gore. No killers lurking in dark alleys with sharp knives at the ready. Oh no, none of that. This horror story by Doris Lessing plays with your psyche.David and Harriet are incredibly happy. They marry for love. They both want a big family--eight or more kids! They get busy and produce four in quick succession. As the reality of caring for their lovely brood hits them hard, they decide to slow down, but get pregnant with No. 5 unexpectedly.And the fifth child is...peculiar. Is he really human? Or is he a primitive man, some kind of throwback from an oddball gene? Ben's birth disrupts this happy family and sends them on a downward spiral that is truly horrifying in its ramifications.The sequel to Lessing's "The Fifth Child" is "Ben, In the World," and I have snapped it up to keep reading the story. Both are short, fast reads.

This book gave me the creeps. A friend told me it was science fiction - I prefer to think of it as a gothic horror story. A couple already have four seemingly perfect children. Mother gets pregnant again, and has lots of problems with the pregnancy: The baby is very active, large, and she is constantly ill, can't sleep, and is exhausted. Once born, mother cannot bond with the child, a boy they call Ben. He is a vicious nurser, and a very physically precocious child. However, his language skills are poor and he can't relate to anyone. He doesn't play with the other children, and is often aggressive. As he ages, there are lots of problems, some quite disturbing: He is physically unattractive. Eventually, it gets so bad they have to take him out of school. At one point, the family places Ben in an institution. The mother's guilt is heart-breaking. It gets worse from there. Her eventual rescue of Ben is vivid, and the "home" is beyond words. Ben's reappearance leads tragically to the disintegration of the family. What the mother eventually decides really took me by surprise - it's almost shocking. Lessing's writing style is compulsively readable and visual, even when the subject is uncomfortable, like this one.

This story borders on horror genre, or maybe fantasy, though in my opinion it's not quite there because the child is just inside of what's believable. You don't have to suspend your belief to let the tale carry you along. A couple aspects are, to me, at least as striking as the child itself. First is the dedication of the mother. She's a little too saintly to be real. We all know the strength of a mother's love, but every human mother is in the end, merely human. This mother would put Mother Theresa of Calcutta in the shade. Also, the heavenly bliss surrounding the family until the fifth child is born is a tad saccharin, but it's portrayal is saved by its setting the stage for what follows. The preternatural bliss of the family at the beginning degenerating into the hellish horror of their world after the arrival of the fifth child is what makes the story so compelling. But it's not just the story itself, which to my experience is unique, but it's well told. It would be difficult to find fault with Lessing's use of the language. My final comment: the story has no resolution worthy of the term, which in most instances would render it intolerable, at least to me. But here it somehow works. The story just sort of turns to dust and smoke and drifts off into the sunset, yet for some reason I found it very satisfying. Yes, I recommend the book to anyone who takes storytelling seriously.

Once again Doris Lessing reveals that she is a master of storytelling. I really appreciate how she lets character develop as a result of action and circumstances. This is a disturbing novel but not really a horror story as some may have described it. It is the story of family and friends, the social fabric of life, and how the entry of something unexpected, challenging, dark and maybe even evil may unravel and tear that fabric. The unexpected may make some family members draw closer and others to draw away. This is the story of a large extended family with strong social bonds and family values are challenged by the birth of a child that is almost Neanderthal and certainly dangerous. A young married couple wishes to have a large family of 8 children and live in a large Victorian mansion but the dream becomes a nightmare when the fifth child is born and all bets are off and all relationships become ambiguous. I would love to see a good film-maker take this short novel and turn it into a motion picture. It is not supernatural, like Rosemary's Baby, but is more subtle as it explores what we do and don't know about those we love and are closest to us in our lives. When a child, such as Ben, enters a family, it is totally realistic to propose that one parent, the mother, is totally focused on this odd child while the other parent, the father, is more concerned with the well being of the other four older children. Both are noble instincts yet this clash of values may subtly undermine a marriage. On a larger scale, this very short novel (which can be read in 4 hours) is a parable about any unexpected life event that may tear the social fabric of our lives. Thus, the evil child Ben, could have been a proxy for mental illness, or domestic violence, or cancer, or a host of challenges that enter our lives and redefine us and pull us toward some loved ones and push us from others. This is an excellent book that is highly recommended.

the sad story of a child born who is unlike everyone else. His self centered, unrealistic parents. For me the book was more about the irresponsible parents than about the unique child they had. I left immensely dislikeing the parents and feeling very sorry for the child who didn't fit in.

I love the Eyewitness guides, use them EVERYWHERE. But the 'Top 10' is really frustrating. I have to make my own lists and write out where everything is because it's hard to tell where in wine country things are, or plan out my days based on location.It would be pretty tough to go from one side to the other in a single day so be very helpful if the book focused more by section (as shown on inside flap) than as a general area.

Obviously a very difficult book to write, owing to the myriad choices required. I had hoped for a bit broader approach, but having lived in the wine country, I should have known that there are easily a top twenty-five or more things to see and do when there.

In preparation for our first vacation in Napa and Sonoma, I ordered this book. It was just what I needed to know. It proved very accurate in it's content. Very much worth using for those new to wine country vacations.

This book is just a way for DK Eyewitness to make extra money. It is almost garbage. It is essentially a list of the vineyards in wine country.

I buy these books for each trip I make. They are perfect for a long weekend trip. They hit the highlights without too much detail and are small enough to carry around in your handbag for quick reference. I never go without them.

I read a couple of the Kowalski books years ago and decided that Shalvis was not for me. Then I apparently forgot why. The premise of Aussie Rules sounded cute, and I didn't remember those earlier reads as terrible or anything like that. Also it was on sale. Thank gawd.I contemplated dnf-ing this book several times for a variety of reasons, but there was a mystery underlying the romance and I wanted to know how it worked out. It could have been fascinating, but the solution was not only boring but also served to emphasize how stupid and shallow these characters were.So you've got Mel the flygirl whose been carrying the small, shabby North Beach air field biz for Sally, the absentee owner and surrogate mom who introduced Mel to flying. Then there's the quirky cast of characters who staff said air field and provide Mel with a found family and a crappe tonne of responsibility. There is also a secondary slow burn romance between Mel's extremely messed up best bud and the airfield's flight mechanic/surfer boy who has no backstory whatsoever. Ironically, he's one of the more appealing characters in the book. Too bad he's so minor.So Mel and her ragtag team are struggling to keep the business afloat, when Bo Black, her former, brief crush and the son of a guy who apparently conned Sally out of a bunch of money, shows up waving a deed to the air field and demanding to see the elusive Sally. Most of the rest of the book consists of Mel and Bo alternating between arguing about who conned who ten years ago and giving in to their mind numbing lust. There is a hellacious lot sex in this book, and it's all pretty predictable. It's all, oooh, they haz chemistry. Every. Other. Chapter. Talk about hammering home the point.There is also "sexy banter" in this book consisting of Bo telling Mel how she feels, her denying it, and then her nipples getting hard as she does exactly what he wants. Bo is Australian by the way. We know this because he says g'day several times and calls people mate a lot. It seems the accent melts panties off of all females in hearing distance so we know it's authentic.Bo and Mel spend a lot of time saying, we-can't-we-can't, then doing it anyway, but the scene that had me skimming everything that followed had Bo showing up at Mel's cottage with info that was going to devastate her. She is interrupted in her bath and answers the door in a shower cap and a towel. She only opens the door because--wait for it--she's expecting a Chinese food delivery. Now I alllllllways greet the pizza guy in a towel, don't you, girls? Gives new meaning to *ber Eats. Once I was done guffawng at the stupidity, I was stunned by Bo's willingness to listen to Mr Boner when he knew he was about to hurt Mel.I disliked so many minor things about this novel--from the plethora of one sentence paragraphs to the exploding hoo-hah to the pathetic solution of the mystery-but the things that upset me most were the substitution of character trait collections for character building, the substitution of meaningless cookie cutter sex for character growth, and the substitution of the "love of a good man" for professional help for Mel's self-destructive best friend.This book probably contains some much loved tropes and the editng was mostly ok. It's just not for me. So two stars.

I felt the author rushed writing this book. The connection between Melanie and Dimi struggled. I had to question Dimi motives all through the book. Was not one of her best works I am glad I only paid .99. The only good thing about Bo is that he was a AussieWell at least I know Jill has written several better books than this one

Melanie Anderson rents space from her longtime friend and mentor Sally to run her small charter service, Anderson Air. Mel lives, eats and breathes flying. She always has, and she always will. In return for a lower fee, Mel manages the North Beach Airport for Sally as well. Bills are piling up and things haven't been running smoothly for a while though, so when Bo Black steps back into the picture, Mel's full plate begins to overflow. Mel and Bo met ten years ago when they were teenagers and Bo's dad Eddie fell for Sally. Things went bad for Eddie, and subsequently Bo, and now Bo's back to find out what really happened between Eddie and Sally. Mel wants Bo out of her airport before he takes control of it and her heart. It seems she's too late though; Bo captured her heart ten years ago.Aussie Rules is a reissue.Aussie Rules has sexual tension so thick you can cut it with a knife. But what's even better than the anticipation of Bo and Mel getting together, is when they actually do. It comes in dribs and drabs. A kiss here, a touch there, its heady stuff. As packed with sexual overtones as Mel and Bo's story is, it also tugs at your heart strings for both of their troubled pasts. Surrounded by a cast of very colorful and endearing characters, including beautiful Dimi and her own heartwarming love story, Mel and Bo find something that comes pretty close to being perfect. There is some language and quite a bit of sex, but there is also heart, romance, suspense and drama to go along with it. Along with several HEA’s.

story was a bit too simple to be interesting.

Being a huge Jill Shalvis fan I had high expectations from Aussie Rules. Don't get me wrong it was a good book just not as good as a lot of her others.Mel is a pilot full of gumption and works at North Beach Air, in fact she pretty much runs it. Sally, the owner, has mysteriously disappeared and Mel is unable to reach her. Along comes Bo Black claiming to be the rightful owner of the airstrip and has the deed to prove it.Mel takes an instant dislike to Bo and doesn't trust him at all. But there is a spark between them and they each feel it. Of course they deny it and steer clear of each other as much as they can while working together.Mel is intent on finding Sally and finding out who the real owner is and what is going on. It is an interesting road they travel. A happily ever after is in store for these two but you will have to read the book to find out how they get there.

I typically LOVE Jill Shalvis books. She is one of my favorite authors. Aussie Rules was my least favorite book by Jill. That being said, I still liked it. It's a good enough read to keep you interested.

The Cactus is a wonderful and uplifting novel with an unlikely, quirky and lovable heroine, Susan Green, who is coping with her mother's death, litigation regarding the will, as well as serious personal issues (I don't want to include spoilers). In spite of her world imploding, she'll find love and friendship. It's a novel about family secrets and domestic strife, and how honesty and goodness can overcome the most negative situations. I read it in an afternoon - evening (finished at 2 am). Susan, who tells her story in the first person, engages the reader from page one. It has great secondary characters and a clever plot. It's set mostly in London and Birmingham. I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy well written, feel good novels with unique characters. A delight to read!

Susan is strict, tough, firm and very practical modern woman. Independent and self-efficient. Adapted for living in an unforgiving environment. Just like the cactuses in her ample collection, she developed spikes to protect her from the dangers and predators. But her precisely planned life soon gets turned upside down and her armour slowly starts to dissolve. Soon she realizes not all the people in her life want to hurt her and not all bonds lead to a broken soul.

This is written in the character of the protagonist, but not in the first person. It’s really funny in a few places (I don’t normally laugh at funny books). Somehow it becomes more real and lovely and moving than you think possible. At no stage was I not thoroughly engrossed (I missed ‘wine time’).

This would have to be one of the best books I've ever read. I wish this author would write more!

The book just didn't catch me. I bought it because the Author was said to be similar to Marian Keyes ... this is very far from the true.

The description and the fears and the hopes of a pregnancy are brilliant!

Funny

This is an easy read but it's annoying how over-the-top "prickly" and ridiculous they make the main character. Not just that I don't like her but the story drags on forever while you wait for something new to happen. It was painful.
