I am blown away with this book. My mother has been sick for 30 years now and I've grown up as a caregiver. In the last 2 years her needs have greatly increased and I've had to put a lot of things in my life on hold. This book has been a saving grace so far. It's such an honest view of the challenges of caregiving and although it addresses all the negative sides and hardships of caregiving, what I'm really getting out of Sheehy's message is the strength to carry on. Addressing the harsh realities yet supplying validation and giving strength to try every day and to find the joy/benefit in the situation I'm in now. Because my mother is never going to get better....and has most likely has years left in her to deteriorate and require around the clock care, I needed something positive to hold on to (in addition to my faith) and this book has been providing that. Even though intellectually I understood the stress of caregiving and the emotional toll it takes on someone, reading about it has helped my head and heart align better. If you are a caregiver, PLEASE invest in this book. It is the ultimate guide whether you are in this situation newly or have been for years.
If a person only bought one book regarding the caregiver's journey, this is the best book to purchase. Gail Sheehy knows of what she writes, having served her husband, as his primary caregiver, throughout his long debilitating illness. The book is replete with personal examples of challenges, struggles, joys, and all of the realities that the huge impact a serious illness has on financial resources and assets. Many lists of resources available for various serious health concerns are included in this well researched work. This is the most helpful book related to care giving that I have ever purchased. Having served as the primary caregiver for my husband, as he continues the PD journey of over 20 years, I relate personally to the message Sheehy expresses so aptly. I learned of this book through a Parkinson's support group. This is a resource one can return to many times for information and encouragement. I have shared this book with other friends who are also involved in caring for a loved one.
I bought this book as a gift for a friend who is currently caring for her husband who has dementia. I read it about 8 years ago after being a caregiver for my husband. It helped me understand some of my experiences after the fact. I highly recommend it for those going through the caregiver experience.
I have used this guide through the passing of 3 of my elder relatives. Most important thing I learned is the phrase “This would be a risky dischargeâ€. In 2 cases, it kept my elderly/ at risk relavtive in th hospital through a weekend transfer to rehab, when rehabs are always low staffed. It gave me the courage to challenge doctors/staff decisions and make them rethink their own company processes for the health of the patients.
An important book for anyone who is just beginning to realize what challenges will arise in being a caregiver, especially is you are the only one doing this. You need this book. There is a lot of help out there, you just need to know where to look for it. Ms Sheehy takes you through the steps.
Passages in Caregiving is a very informative book for people in caregiving positions. The author's personal history is a bit lengthy, but necessary for the reader to understand the reason for this book being written. The book will resonate with anyone who is or has been a caregiver.
I was in a bookstore when Gail Sheehy was reviewing her book and the audience each received a free copy. I read it and realized how important this book was. It is a moving story of her personal caregiving experience but more importantly it gives the reader CONCRETE information for anyone who finds her/himself in this position. It is a how-to guide with what it needed at these critical times: how to deal with your emotions, your siblings, expenses, bureaucracy, the different stages of the patient's decline plus names/phone numbers/addresses of help, state by state. I did a book review for a group and everyone praised this as a "Bible" for all of us who find ourselves taking care of someone.
Great and practical suggestions with the appropriate contact information, which makes it very useful. I am dealing with an elderly husband and it was helpful to read about someone else who at times felt so overwhelmed. Realistically, keeping someone as incapacitated as Sheehy's husband at home would not be what many of us could do.
