I read a couple of the Kowalski books years ago and decided that Shalvis was not for me. Then I apparently forgot why. The premise of Aussie Rules sounded cute, and I didn't remember those earlier reads as terrible or anything like that. Also it was on sale. Thank gawd.I contemplated dnf-ing this book several times for a variety of reasons, but there was a mystery underlying the romance and I wanted to know how it worked out. It could have been fascinating, but the solution was not only boring but also served to emphasize how stupid and shallow these characters were.So you've got Mel the flygirl whose been carrying the small, shabby North Beach air field biz for Sally, the absentee owner and surrogate mom who introduced Mel to flying. Then there's the quirky cast of characters who staff said air field and provide Mel with a found family and a crappe tonne of responsibility. There is also a secondary slow burn romance between Mel's extremely messed up best bud and the airfield's flight mechanic/surfer boy who has no backstory whatsoever. Ironically, he's one of the more appealing characters in the book. Too bad he's so minor.So Mel and her ragtag team are struggling to keep the business afloat, when Bo Black, her former, brief crush and the son of a guy who apparently conned Sally out of a bunch of money, shows up waving a deed to the air field and demanding to see the elusive Sally. Most of the rest of the book consists of Mel and Bo alternating between arguing about who conned who ten years ago and giving in to their mind numbing lust. There is a hellacious lot sex in this book, and it's all pretty predictable. It's all, oooh, they haz chemistry. Every. Other. Chapter. Talk about hammering home the point.There is also "sexy banter" in this book consisting of Bo telling Mel how she feels, her denying it, and then her nipples getting hard as she does exactly what he wants. Bo is Australian by the way. We know this because he says g'day several times and calls people mate a lot. It seems the accent melts panties off of all females in hearing distance so we know it's authentic.Bo and Mel spend a lot of time saying, we-can't-we-can't, then doing it anyway, but the scene that had me skimming everything that followed had Bo showing up at Mel's cottage with info that was going to devastate her. She is interrupted in her bath and answers the door in a shower cap and a towel. She only opens the door because--wait for it--she's expecting a Chinese food delivery. Now I alllllllways greet the pizza guy in a towel, don't you, girls? Gives new meaning to *ber Eats. Once I was done guffawng at the stupidity, I was stunned by Bo's willingness to listen to Mr Boner when he knew he was about to hurt Mel.I disliked so many minor things about this novel--from the plethora of one sentence paragraphs to the exploding hoo-hah to the pathetic solution of the mystery-but the things that upset me most were the substitution of character trait collections for character building, the substitution of meaningless cookie cutter sex for character growth, and the substitution of the "love of a good man" for professional help for Mel's self-destructive best friend.This book probably contains some much loved tropes and the editng was mostly ok. It's just not for me. So two stars.
I felt the author rushed writing this book. The connection between Melanie and Dimi struggled. I had to question Dimi motives all through the book. Was not one of her best works I am glad I only paid .99. The only good thing about Bo is that he was a AussieWell at least I know Jill has written several better books than this one
Melanie Anderson rents space from her longtime friend and mentor Sally to run her small charter service, Anderson Air. Mel lives, eats and breathes flying. She always has, and she always will. In return for a lower fee, Mel manages the North Beach Airport for Sally as well. Bills are piling up and things haven't been running smoothly for a while though, so when Bo Black steps back into the picture, Mel's full plate begins to overflow. Mel and Bo met ten years ago when they were teenagers and Bo's dad Eddie fell for Sally. Things went bad for Eddie, and subsequently Bo, and now Bo's back to find out what really happened between Eddie and Sally. Mel wants Bo out of her airport before he takes control of it and her heart. It seems she's too late though; Bo captured her heart ten years ago.Aussie Rules is a reissue.Aussie Rules has sexual tension so thick you can cut it with a knife. But what's even better than the anticipation of Bo and Mel getting together, is when they actually do. It comes in dribs and drabs. A kiss here, a touch there, its heady stuff. As packed with sexual overtones as Mel and Bo's story is, it also tugs at your heart strings for both of their troubled pasts. Surrounded by a cast of very colorful and endearing characters, including beautiful Dimi and her own heartwarming love story, Mel and Bo find something that comes pretty close to being perfect. Aussie Rules is a suspenseful, fun, and sensual story that left me smiling at the end.NannetteReviewed for Joyfully Reviewed
There is some language and quite a bit of sex, but there is also heart, romance, suspense and drama to go along with it. Along with several HEA’s.
story was a bit too simple to be interesting.
Being a huge Jill Shalvis fan I had high expectations from Aussie Rules. Don't get me wrong it was a good book just not as good as a lot of her others.Mel is a pilot full of gumption and works at North Beach Air, in fact she pretty much runs it. Sally, the owner, has mysteriously disappeared and Mel is unable to reach her. Along comes Bo Black claiming to be the rightful owner of the airstrip and has the deed to prove it.Mel takes an instant dislike to Bo and doesn't trust him at all. But there is a spark between them and they each feel it. Of course they deny it and steer clear of each other as much as they can while working together.Mel is intent on finding Sally and finding out who the real owner is and what is going on. It is an interesting road they travel. A happily ever after is in store for these two but you will have to read the book to find out how they get there.
I typically LOVE Jill Shalvis books. She is one of my favorite authors. Aussie Rules was my least favorite book by Jill. That being said, I still liked it. It's a good enough read to keep you interested.
