I have the 'Bookmagic' (2008) revised edition of 'The Art of Making Fermented Sausages, in addition to other sausage making books by the brothers.Maybe the best way into reviewing this book is to ask 'who would/should buy it?' Any 'foodie' who is curious about where the pepperoni on their pizza came from will learn a lot about the whole class of 'fermented meat sausages.' The same goes for customers at local deli counters in mega-marts who are buying a range of salamis. 'Home-style' and commercial methods and chemicals are explained from the practical standpoint of which substance does what important thing in producing flavour while promoting food safety. 'Aspirational' (want-to, someday) sausage makers will find a usable, detailed guide to the equipment list that will be the major barrier to most of us in making fermented sausage at home. The 'easy' part of making fermented sausage is the chemistry--for practical purposes, the cure mixes and starter cultures so clearly explained by the authors. 'Meatheads'--meat fanatics--will definitely want this book on their shelves--for the (some) fifty classic recipes for fermented sausages, even including one or two from the Asian sausage kitchen. The emphasis in the recipe section is definitely European, northern and southern.The book begins with a workmanlike 'history' of fermented meats. The brothers introduce 'New Concepts' including what we now know about controlling available water, pH, temperature and humidity to produce fermented sausage. We are introduced to 'more than we need to understand' material about types of bacteria, how they multiply and what controls that multiplication, color and flavour-forming reactions and the like. In chapter four, sausage makers will learn plenty about the two basic approaches to controlling bacteria while producing color and flavour: slow fermentation and fast fermentation. The 'liberating stuff' comes in chapter five, with a practical overview of 'starter cultures', the key to modern production at home or in the factory, of quality fermented sausages. The recipe section includes items I have never tasted, let alone made. Items I have made or tasted in artisanal production include: cervelat, chorizo, farmer sausage, Medwurst, Merguez, Braunschweiger and Summer Sausage. Well, I have also eaten Mortadella, plenty of Pepperoni, Genoa Salami, Salchichon and Thuringer sausages. A reader will have a very fine understanding of how each and every one of these sausages is made. The book abounds with helpful notes and technical tables, with source attribution for any true sausage maker who can make the equipment to venture into these subjects.I must come back to the 'equipment list.' Home handymen will not have any problems in following the Marianski brothers' descriptions/photographs for converting a foam insulated cabinet (old refrigerator) to make a temperature/humidity-controlled tool/environment for home-aging cuts of beef, curing hams or for making a whole range of fermented sausage products. Having dedicated refrigerator space for long-term drying and curing of sausages is also stressed in the book. With fermented sausage products, control of temperature during every step of processing from 'breaking down' larger cuts of meat through grinding and on into fermentation is critical. Equally important, measuring pH (acid-base continuum) in the meat and controlling and measuring humidity (which needs to change at various stages of fermentation and drying) requires some simple and inexpensive instruments that will not be found around the house. Unfortunately, it does not seem that all of this equipment comes from the commercial marketplace in any affordable package sized for the 'home' sausage producer. If you want to make sausage and are handy, this is the book for you!What makes this a Marianski Brothers' 'classic?' They are thorough but repetitive about processes and chemistry, as other reviewers have noted. If YOU get the point they are making, move on and glance over the same/similar material the next time it comes up. I feel the authors use repetition as a teaching tool. Above all, they aim to produce instructional books about their craft. In the end, all the 'chemistry' is 'nice to know' and you will be more comfortable with whatever you pick up about 'why' as well as 'how', but it comes down to using careful measurements of ingredients listed in their recipes and following recommended procedures. Our forefathers weren't food scientists either.Find where you fit on my suggested continuum and, if you see yourself anywhere, you will want this book.

Yes, this book has some grammatical errors but they do nothing to detract from the wealth of information contained inside. This book fills in the gaps present in almost every other book.This book explains the technical details behind how the sausages dry, what factors increase or decrease drying time, what that means for the product, how to control it and how to control pathogens. This is all done in language and terms that any serious home sausage maker can understand.Most valuable are the discussions and charts of the commercially available starter cultures and their characteristics. You don't find that anywhere else, not even the manufacturer's websites. Also discussed is how to build your own fermentation chambers and drying rooms. It's all laid out very straightforwardly.I agree, this book is NOT the only book you should buy on the subject. Read a few others (like "Charcuterie") and then, when you're scratching your head, read this one and you will find the answers.

I appreciate the work that went into this book, however the editing was really poor and there is quite a bit of information that is duplicated where it need not be so. I would still recommend it, but I would also go back and professionally edit the book.

Like other recent books by the Marianski's this one is self-published, through Outskirts Press, and it clearly has not benefited from the services of a professional editor or proofreader. The book is littered with grammar mistakes, typographical errors, and odd locutions. The way the text is organized, they end up covering the same subjects from multiple angles, with the result that they repeat themselves over and over. Sometimes the organization simply seems haphazard, with "notes" appearing at the end of a section which could be more accurately labeled "afterthoughts." The information presented is clear and accurate; just don't expect a gripping read.This book is definitely a useful addition for any other meathead out there wanting to try and make fermented sausages at home. As a book dedicated to this subject, they go deeper into the issues of chemistry, microbiology, sanitation, and equipment (for smoking, fermenting, and drying) that all affect the quality of the finished product. The second part contains 50 detailed recipes, with precise measurements in grams, so that even a relative newcomer to this craft can proceed with confidence. This book usefully bridges the gap between simpler cookbooks and advanced textbooks such as Fidel Toldrá's Handbook of Fermented Meat and Poultry (which sells for $200). Ordinarily I have no problem shelling out money for everything Harry Potter. But this was the most disappointing HP purchase I've ever made. First off it's surprisingly small. 5 pages, one of which I had to manually make pop out (not sure if my book is defective or it was designed that way). The information on each page is bare minimum. Just a couple sentences on "beasts" in various HP movies and the upcoming Fantastic Beasts movie. Most of which we already know. New information would have been nice. Something actually interesting. Did I mention it's 5 pages. That's it. 5 "beasts". And they aren't even visually appealing illustrations. It's like a photo still from the movies just more abstracted. I'm actually considering returning it I dislike it so much but it was shrinkwrapped on arrival so I'm not sure if that's allowed.

I buy and collect a lot of pop-up books, so I'm not surprised by how few pages there are or how expensive it is, but the content of this book is very remedial and the artwork is not visually appealing. The Harry Potter pop-up book is intricate and is robustly colored while this looks like a cartoony, faded, children's book from the 90s. If you're a collector of pop-up books or Harry Potter texts, I would sleep easily skipping this one.

Very disappointed. I thought this would be similar to the other Harry Potter pop-up books, but it is much smaller and only 4 pop-ups. The only thing huge about this book is my disappointment.

Wish I had listened to the reviews. Terrible illustrations and the wrapper that keeps the book closed is all that has any writing on it, so it defeats the purpose of displaying the book. If you keep the wrapper on, it’s too much of a pain in the ass for anyone to take it off to look at the book. If you keep the wrapper off, no one knows what it is, so it doesn’t draw any attention.

I expected this book to be full of beasts and not the complicated rooms. Disappointed-- not in the service, but in the product. Also-- very hard to get the binding ribbon off and on without breaking it.

Like many pop-up books, there's not many pages. Without reading the stories, I enjoy the beautiful, colorful pages and the fun pop-up pieces. I thought they were cleaver and fun. There's so much to look at. Great book for fans of the series and collectors.

It is a nice book and the pop up pages are very detailed. It would make better sense if the pages were in some logical order, like chronological.

(Disclaimer: I received an Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of the book. Read it. Decided to provide my honest review). Cupcakes and Celebrities, Pelican Cove Cozy Mystery 2 by Leena Clover is a HOOT! From page one, it was as if coming home. Everything felt familiar. I had no trouble settling into the storyline, I was ready, if not eager to start reading. The main character, Jenny, who as I mentioned in book one was well developed in the areas of strength, humility, vulnerability, and persistence. In Cupcakes and Celebrities, it seems the author thought she could use additional characteristics such as being perturbed, "uh-huh", cantankerous, and self-confident. There was a more detail about Pelican Cove providing breadth to the storyline. But, in a cozy murder-mystery, it's the simplicity, yet complexity, that drives its success and Leena Clover hit the nail on the head. The author builds characters that are convincing and fun to be with and a storyline, that keeps you engaged from the first through the last page with an ending you didn’t expect leaving me saying "what?" Cupcakes and Celebrities delivered on all fronts even with a hanging chad. When is the next book and will Jenny get her man? MY RECOMMENDATION: It’s a 5-STAR GREAT read! Better if you read Strawberries and Strangers first. Cupcakes and Celebrities will not disappoint. –Tex Cupcakes and Celebrities: A Cozy Murder Mystery (Pelican Cove Cozy Mystery Series Book 2)

This is the second book of this series I have read. The story line is good and the characters are likable. I liked the fact that they were clean little books with no bad language..any age can read these books. I did find the sometimes short and choppy sentences annoying. I found myself putting some of the sentences together in my head...and then I would laugh at myself for doing this. I will keep buying and reading these little books because they are cute and the mysteries are good and-- I want to see if she changes her writing style as she goes along.

I like cozy mysteries for the clean language aspect. I read this one seeing if the characters developedmore fully. I found the descriptive words for the characters (shrieked, cackled, thundered, etc ) in thesituations at the time to be silly. The opposites attract as described for Jenny and Adam, as well as their dialogIs not realistic for a couple of middle aged adults. Sometimes a character asks a question or makes a point, and it is never answered or addressed. The setup of the page and editing may be the problem, more than writing; I can't tell, but it does feel unfinishedbecause of this.

Between various points of bad grammar & no development happening (& the love triangle growing tiresome), this series doesn’t shine - there’s no draw to keep reading (unless you’re at the DMV).

This series is rapidly becoming a favorite for me. I enjoy that Jenny is in her forties and she is loyal to her friends. I like her relationships with Adam and Jason as well as Heather and Molly. Wish there were recipes for her chicken salad and crab salad. Looking forward to her continuing adventures.

I love the characters from Jenny,Adam ,Star and the other family and friends. Glad it's a series and relationships are. Its was a great murder mystery. Could not pick out murderer. Thank you for entertaining me. Every reader would enjoy this book and previous one.

I really enjoyed this story. The twists and turns kept me guessing until the very end. I really enjoyed the relationships between the characters. Star is my favorite character. I can't wait to read the next book.

He’s got a driver type A no nonsense personality but without all the annoying Grant Cardone BS. I would recommend this book to entrepreneurs or anyone interested in business.

The physical book in itself is quality and didn't have any issues but thestory is not my style.

I realize that I am late coming to the ‘Handmaid’ party. It has been my intention to read it for some long time, but for some reason that I don’t fully understand, I was intimidated by the gravity of the book. I really wanted to be impressed, but Atwood’s view of a dark dystopian society left me depressed, confused and ultimately bored.I confess, I couldn’t finish the book. I couldn’t force myself to endure more than 115 pages peppered with complete and unnecessary gibberish. ‘If I have an egg, what more can I want?’ There are tons of this fluff.Atwood’s view of the future, and I assume that’s what I think we must consider that she intends, is poppycock. A nightmare with no beginning, middle or end. If this is what is in store for us, count me out.I was interested in a storyline or two along the way, but the author refused to develop them, instead droning on and on about meaningless details in the heroine’s life, or existence.I couldn’t go any further. My mind kept drifting to all the really entertaining stories out there, waiting to be read and enjoyed. Why was I wasting precious time reading tripe?

I first read The Handmaid's Tale around the time it was published in 1986. I was just 22, a sheltered young thing. I recall wondering what everyone was raving about, since only the top story layer of the book connected for me. Now, with decades of life experience behind me, I see that this is a deeply moving, complex book. I'm so glad I decide to read again just at this moment in time.You would think that something written thirty years ago would seem dated. But that wasn't the case for me. If anything, I think there are so many things imagined in the book which have become more possible today instead of less. In a sense, this is a cautionary tale that a large art of the population ignored or misunderstood.More than ever, we should be reading this and sharing it with the young women in our lives. And discussing it with them, so they see more of the depth than my 22-year-old self did.Margaret Atwood imagined a world where a totalitarian power went into action against foreign zealots and their own people's "wanton" behavior. This power was meant to make the world better, but it also created a world of highly distinct "haves" and "have nots."She says, “Better never means better for everyone... It always means worse, for some.” It might be just me (although I suspect not) but this sure sounds like what we often hear today on the news and in conversations.Reading this at the end of 2016 after a brutal election cycle, the following quote from Atwood seems both wise and horrible. Have we not been hearing about people who feel invisible?“We were the people who were not in the papers. We lived in the blank white spaces at the edges of print. It gave us more freedom. We lived in the gaps between the stories"Atwood's Republic of Gilead gives people one-dimensional functions. Correction - she gives women one-dimensional functions. They are Wives, Marthas, Handmaids, Aunts, or Unwomen (and a few more which would be spoilers). Unwomen are rebels, likely to be banished to the toxic waste dumps of the colonies. Everyone else plays a part in the singular female focus - procreation. As I read, I wondered what category I'd fall into should I have the bad luck to land in Gilead. The women there have no layers of life or experience. They are expected only to fulfill their narrow role.Why is procreation such a focus? Because of falling birth rates among white people. This book doesn't discuss race except one small spot near the end. It's as if there is only one race in Gilead. And the only people in that race with any power are men.The main character, Offred (literally of Fred named after the Commander she serves) is the perfect blend of weak and strong. She tells us of her past and says, “When we think of the past it's the beautiful things we pick out. We want to believe it was all like that.” But her life is not beautiful. And Atwood straddles the line of past and present, sending back and forth in a way that keeps you wanting more. Just as Offred wants more. Just as we all want more for ourselves and the generations of women coming after us.If you read this book long ago, pick it up again. If you haven't yet read it, move it up to the top of your TBR. Buy it for friends. Buy for your sons and daughters. Use it to teach and to learn what kind of world we could be if we stop valuing the diversity of all people.

Perfect last line to this book as I was left with so many questions at the end...the first of which was simply, "Huh?".This book confused me. Given all of the hype around it, I was expecting much more from this book. It was decent and I can completely understand how it would translate well into a mini-series or movie...but I just couldn't get my head around how/why things changed so quickly in society...over night, all women's rights were taken away but there seemed to be little information as to who or why. I was further confused by tourists coming into Gilead...why were there fully functioning societies outside of Gilead that seem to have been unaffected by whatever caused this tremendous shift in US society. How could this have gone on for so long afterwards without a civil war of sorts breaking out. Without having more information of the total collapse of society and a little more longevity of what lead to the collapse, it was hard to buy into this tale.If I could buy into the collapse of society and the development of Gilead to save the human race, there just wasn't enough information on how the Handmaids, the Aunts, etc were chosen, why they took healthy children away from their birth families and assigned the mothers of those children to other households for procreation...none of it made much sense. Also, what happened to the women in the colonies, the "unbabies", etc.There was a great core to this story, just not enough detail to support any of it so I was very disappointed in the end.

There was so much great hype about the television series that I was eager to read the book. Very interesting story. But I was greatly disappointed that the ending was full of holes. The main character had to guard her every thought, yet the ending reveals the story is being told based on her diary. Even if she'd had writing materials, which she didn't, she'd never have dared write down her thoughts and risk the results of exposure. Big let down.

I have to admit while parts of this novel where intriguing, most of it, I found difficult get through. The beginning until half way through was quite boring and if it hadn't been a required text for class I would've dropped it. On the other hand it was different and lacked the cliche main character that fights for freedom and justice, but then again that's the kind of character I like. I do recommend trying it for yourself as it wasn't a terrible read. I loved the ending though. It was open ended leaving you able to create an ending that you would like to have happened.

In other words, if a dealer would have placed similar ads, we are confident the dealer would be in violation of the MVDA’s advertising regulations.” Trillium Automobile Dealers Association (TADA) 2016, as submitted to the Ontario Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs Lemon-Aid supports TADA’s conclusion that carmakers’ ads are deceptive. And, as it’s coming from Canada’s largest provincial new car dealer association with a membership of over 1,000 dealers – that’s almost a third of all new car dealers in Canada – government regulators should be listening. More Choice, Better Deals Fueled by low crude-oil prices, rock-bottom interest rates and extended-term loans, Canadians binged on new vehicles in 2017. New vehicle sales over the last 5 years have smashed all previous records. However, over the same period, passenger-car sales have slumped as consumers embraced crossovers, SUVs and pickup trucks, encouraged by the perceived utility of driving a multipurpose vehicle. Changing consumer tastes enabled Fiat Chrysler, Ford and General Motors to make windfall profits by pushing fully-loaded, technology-laden pickup trucks and sport utilities. With light trucks and SUVs outselling cars two to one in North America, the trend has prompted Fiat Chrysler Automobiles to drop all but a couple of car models from its lineup. Slow sedan sales have also been troublesome for Ford and GM. Reportedly, GM is contemplating killing the decades-old Chevrolet Impala, as well as the Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac CT6 and XTS. All are large sedans few shoppers find appealing anymore. Although motorists welcome the savings at the pump, lower gas prices aren’t entirely good for the auto industry or the environment. Here are some time-tested tips. 1. Buy a vehicle that is relatively uncomplicated, easy to service and has been sold in large numbers over many years. This will ensure that cheaper, independent repair shops can provide service and there is a good supply of less expensive aftermarket parts. 2. The old axiom that there is a right way, a wrong way and an expensive European way to fix a car still holds true for most models from the European luxury carmakers. Dealer service is notoriously expensive after the warranty is over, parts can be very expensive, and only a few specialist independent garages invest in the expensive equipment needed to service them. 3. Think twice before you buy a diesel. Most give a poor return on expenditure, are complicated to service and dealer-dependent. Recent European “clean diesels” are dirtier and less reliable than their gasoline equivalents and expensive to maintain and repair. 4. Be wary of Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep models if you’re buying a new vehicle to own for the long haul. Fiat Chrysler is the weakest of the Detroit Three and its lineup has a history of serious safety- and performance-related defects, with the TIPM module being a case in point. A defective Totally Integrated Power Module, or TIPM, can introduce a tsunami of electrical faults, including no-start conditions, dead instruments, no cooling fan (leading to engine overheating) and random stalling. Automatic transmissions, brakes, the electrical system and air conditioners on several Fiat Chrysler group vehicles are also troublesome. On the other hand, the Canadian-made Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 break the mould and are recommended buys. The Dodge RAM is a good pickup buy. However, the new EcoDiesel V6, supplied by Fiat, in the RAM 1500 light-duty pickup has been very troublesome. 5. Don’t be blinded by luxury brands. Higher-priced vehicles don’t ensure you will get a higher level of quality or reliability. Think Cadillac ATS and XTS, Lincoln MKS, MKT, MKX (with EcoBoost) and the VW Touareg. Many of the premium European brands, including Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, are touted as the pinnacle of luxury and perfection, yet seasoned owners will tell you that these complex machines can break down regularly, especially after the factory warranty and no-charge service plan (a common sales incentive) expire. If you want a luxury badge, the Asian brands offer better reliability, with Lexus and Acura leading the pack. 6. Avoid turbocharged engines when it’s still possible if you’re planning to keep your vehicle for the long haul (8 years or more). Auto manufacturers are turning to turbocharged small engines to hit ever more ambitious fuel-economy targets set by the government. Unfortunately, in real-world driving they are often little more fuel efficient than larger six-cylinder and V8 engines, and not as smooth. For instance, the Automobile Protection Association (APA) found that 2013-2015 Fords with EcoBoost four-cylinder engines burn more fuel than similar models with conventional four-cylinder engines. Turbo-equipped vehicles can generate rosy numbers in laboratory fuel economy tests, where the acceleration cycle is so gentle that the turbo is hardly working, but the APA’s real-world evaluations revealed that the actual fuel consumption of some models is disappointing and the likelihood of expensive repairs down the road is higher. So far, Toyota has completely avoided turbocharged engines in its mainstream vehicles. 7. Don’t buy a Ford vehicle equipped with a dual-clutch (PowerShift) automatic transmission. Developed by Ford and Getrag, the automated six-speed is essentially a manual transmission with two clutches alternating to engage the gears. Electric solenoid actuation provides quick and efficient shifts, avoiding the hydraulic losses associated with torque converters. While it enhances economy, the complex transmission is jerky in operation and, ultimately, unreliable. Found in Focus and Fiesta models, the automatic transmission is extremely expensive to replace after the end of the warranty. Dual-clutch automatic transmissions in VW and Audi products are also troublesome, with expensive failures after the warranty expires. 8. Choose a used vehicle with a conventional hydraulic automatic transmission, or a manual gearbox if you are comfortable with a gearshift. Be wary of continuously variable (CVT) automatics in used vehicles. With the exception of Synergy Drive transmissions used in the Prius and other Toyota hybrids, all the automakers selling vehicles in North America with CVT automatics have been bedeviled by poor durability. Nissan CVT-equipped vehicles were so failure prone that the company extended its warranty for up to 10 years on vehicles produced until 2010. Nissan’s transmission subsidiary, Jatco, has supplied the same CVT transmission to other makes, such as Jeep. Fortunately, new vehicles with CVTs have become somewhat less risky, as materials, lubricants and computer programming have evolved to address durability concerns. 9. Check to see if the vehicle comes with a spare tire and jack, not a spray can of sealant and air compressor. Include this stipulation in the contract. If you wait until after the vehicle is delivered, the dealer will likely charge you $350+ for a space-saver spare, jack and tie-down assembly. Some models, like the MINI and certain BMWs, have no provision for a spare tire in their cargo areas. In that case, you will likely be stuck with hard-riding and more expensive run-flat tires, or required to call roadside assistance when a conventional tire goes flat. 10. Don’t buy a new vehicle with below-average reliability. Yes, an extended warranty can help address the risks that come with a vehicle that has a reputation for failures, but choosing a better vehicle is the better solution. New vehicles with poor reliability eventually suffer from plunging depreciation, which impacts your pocketbook at trade-in time. An alternative is to lease the vehicle if payments are attractive, with the knowledge that the automaker will be on the hook for major repairs and any loss on resale. 11. Use your credit card for the down payment and put down as little money as possible. If you want to cancel a sales contract or work order because a promised service wasn’t delivered, it’s easier to do with a credit card than with cash.

Fantastic book. If you are going to buy a car, used or new, you really do need to read this book. Public library. No purchase. The guy nails it w these books. Cars are very expensive. Buying the wrong car can really play havoc with the family budget. Caveat emptor is a lousy way to buy a vehicle. Have all the insider info you can get. Read this book. Save your budget, too. Know which cars are good to go and which should be avoided. Heartily recommend this one.

This is the Gold Standard of automotive review books. Stay away from things like Consumer Reports and J.D. Power.....pure nonsense. All Consumer Reports and J.D. Power will do is get you into a whole heap of trouble.

each issue develops more than just the main character but keeps the main character as it's center. not only are you rooting for sho but as you learn more about each teammate you start town care about them too. yes you want sho town be the best but you also want the team town be a team. the kind of sports manga I enjoy.

these multiple book storylines drive me crazy but so far it has been worth the wait. but since the next book is not out I will have town wait longer than the past.

needs previous book and next book town totally tell a story but still good. Still a great series. hope future books do not always end in cliffhanger.
