One of the most useless books I’ve ever read! I ordered it by mistake and plowed through half of it just to punish myself, but eventually I could take no more. Boring, trite, and without an ounce of useful information.Also, the premise, as explained is total BS. I work on a suicide and crisis line and if I applied the “principles” of this book to the calls I take, people would hang up on me!

At the outset, if you are agnostic or atheist, there are many God references. If you are a believer, you may disagree with her version of God.There is a reason you ought never to say to someone who has endured a loss that "everything happens for a reason." Often it doesn't, at least not for any reason related to the victim. It is not good to personalize every bad event in our lives, and this is exactly what the author would lead the reader to do.By positing that all misfortunes are brought to us by some "cosmic kindergarten" to teach us one of only 10 possible lessons, we are being told a simplified and twisted story. Not to say that we cannot ultimately create meaning out of our losses, which is what the author intends to say. But with courage, hope, the will not to give in to the bad, and with some guidance, there are many possible lessons we can get from a loss, there is no limit of ten.Lastly, the book completely omits discussing the all-important grieving phase essential to process and deal successfully with loss.I very much wanted to like the book, and I certainly think the author means well, but after reading it I cannot enthusiastically recommend it.I found these books helpful:Transcending Loss, PrendNecessary Losses, ViorstWhen Bad Things Happen to Good People, Kushner

I found this to be one of the most useless books I’ve ever attempted to read. It’s a collection of moments from the lives of clients she has served. I felt as if I was reading in circles and getting nowhere. I looked for the application to life, but the more I read, the more frustrated I became. I couldn’t follow where Kirshenbaum was headed. I really did try to find this readable by returning to the book to persevere through each sentence. I can’t recommend and won’t pass it on to a friend.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I had some things happen in my life that were unpleasant and unexpected, but this book really helped me to see the blessing in disguise in each of those situations. Each chapter was full of good advice and I was able to reflect on what was said in my journal. There are also rhetorical questions in each chapter that I used as journaling prompts to help me work through some things that happened. I truly believe everything happens for a reason, but this book not only solidified that belief but also helped me think "outside" the box, and gave me insight. Great book, especially if something negative happens and you're struggling with how to deal with it. I even gave it as a Christmas gift for a few people.

I really like Mira's premise that there are ten reasons that every traumatic "I don't get it- why me?" event happens. One that I started to skip over, thinking that it did not apply to me, drew me in. It reminded me that this was the big why of a certain string of events and that I still have some work to do in this area. This book is very "readable" and I think that anyone who is looking for reasons will find them in this book.

I got into Pokémon Go from the very start, but let's face it, when it launched the game was very much a work in progress. I lost interest after a short while, but as time went by and more cool features were added, my love for the game was rekindled. However, when I jumped back in I was met with so many new features that it was a bit overwhelming (new berries, evolution items, events, different colored eggs, several dozen new Pokémon, nets, etc), and every single gym was filled with extremely high level monsters that seemed impossible to beat. I didn't even think I would ever reach a level high enough to really enjoy the game without dishing a lot of money in order to catch up.This guide makes it a much more rewarding experience since it helps me feel like I'm always achieving something meaningful and that I'm doing it in a more efficient manner. I fell like my progress is smart and quick, and I enjoy the game much more because of it. I also now actually have a strategy for battleing and am no longer intimidated by gyms even if my Pokémon aren't on par with the CP of the monsters that inhabit gyms. I've actually scored a few victories thanks to this guide. All in all, if you like this game this guide is easily worth the price since it will probably end up saving you a lot of the money you would have invested in Pokécoins.Bottom line: Catching them all is easier, faster, and cheaper with this guide.

There are many tips and tricks I never thought of doing but make perfect sense after reading about it. The gym battling chapters are very useful (though will probably have to be updated once Niantic changes the gym system) as well as the tips for getting more XP out of your lucky eggs. The author acknowledges there are great resources outside of this guide that allow for more detailed analysis.One negative I've found at the time of writing this is that the guide can't be searched for specific words within the Kindle Cloud Reader. I'm not sure if that's a submission problem or a limitation within Kindle.The other great thing is that the author doesn't go into cheating at all. Cheating doesn't belong in this or any game.

There is information for everyone from those completely unaware of the Pokémon Universe prior to the release of Pokémon Go to those who can (and do) quote entire episodes of the cartoon show. The curtain is pulled back and the hows and whys of the game are revealed in as much (or as little) detail as fits the reader's comfort level. Suggestions are offered, but never is a "right way" to enjoy the game pushed; something I appreciate as I often play with a multigenerational group of five, no two of whom play the game the same way. I found answers to questions that I had spent a lot of time and energy running down, and those that I never expected to have answered. (Which comes first, the Pokémon or the egg?) Really a must have companion for the game!

Here I am trying to catch them all in time for BBQ season and I can't find the recipes for spicy Pikachu ANYWHERE. What a disappointment.Seriously, although a few punctuation and grammar errors betray this work's amateur origins, the organization, detail and smooth acknowledgement of contributors from Reddit and other sources made this a very good read overall. My biggest real complaint is that it didn't cover all of what I wanted it to cover.The thing that makes Pokemon GO so much fun is that while you can just goof off and play everything by ear and still turn out well enough, the rest of us can optimize our gameplay for peak efficiency. Thorne-Jeffrey has given us the numerical data we need to do just that. I already knew that using lower-CP attackers would help me level up a friendly gym faster, but I thought that only applied to pairs of Pokemon that actually fought each other. I'd get a 1600 Wigglytuff to fight a 1800 Gyrados and then field a 2500 Exeggutor against a 2600 Vaporeon and wonder why it wasn't working. My other major disappointment was that it was only available in Kindle format, which is very hard to print out and read offline and not easily searchable. I'd been expecting a .pdf like the sample chapter and would gladly have paid more for a different form.I would add that there IS a good reason to invest Pokecoins in bag upgrades: If you do not live near good Pokestop refuel grounds and have to visit them to stock up.

What was Maya life before the arrival of the Spanish? What is all the fuss about the Popol Vuh? How was the Maya code broken? What was the role of chocolate? How was rape used to control the masses? Why is Rigoberta Menchu so well known? No matter to which page you turn, you will interesting, well-written articles that will captivate you.

This is not the book for a casual reader. It is an in depth exploration of the history of Guatemala using source documents over a 300 year period. I found it fascinating and loved reading it. Sort of a lite version of a college textbook, but no one has already marked it up with highlighter. If you want to know why Guatemala is the way it is, and you have the tolerance to read a wide variety of source documents, I highly recommend this book. If a Michener book is as historic as you want to be, this may not be for you.

The Guatemala Reader is an impressive compilation of 200 texts in a broad, comprehensive introduction to Guatemala’s history, culture, and politics. I wish I had this when I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in the early 70s, or when studying for my Masters at the Institute of Latin America at the University of Texas later in the decade, not to mention over eight years working with different organizations, as these materials provide a wealth of insights into the beauty and complexity of Guatemala. This book will appeal to travelers, scholars, students and practitioners alike as it presents the stark realities behind the beautiful façade.The editors bring together a formidable source of information about the Maya, including selections from the first piece, and an excerpt from the Popol Vuh, a mid-sixteenth-century text believed to be the single most important source documenting pre-Hispanic Maya culture. Acknowledged experts like Michael Coe provide fascinating background information on “Breaking the Maya Code”, which was made possible by a Soviet linguist who travelled from Russia to Guatemala in 1990. While there, he received a medal from Guatemala’s first civilian president, only to have modern Guatemala politics come to the fore when he received a death threat and had to depart from Guatemala in haste. Each article is preceded by insightful background information like this.“Acts of Genocide: Commission for Historical Clarification” provides invaluable background to understand the longstanding racism within the country. The commission describes how the army defined entire Maya communities as “internal enemies”, so the annihilation of Maya populations was intentional, even though the military’s overarching motivation was officially to “defeat the insurgency”. I’d heard of such examples of ethnic cleansing, but didn’t appreciate the history behind it until reading some of these articles. Additional articles provide a real appreciation of the incredible influx of refugees to the U.S., which, according to Exodus, the Catholic Church estimated that a million people, or 15% of the population, were displaced during the violent period of the 1980s.New sources of information made possible by the “Freedom of Information” act provide an additional appreciation of the CIA’s 1954 orchestrated coup that overthrew a democratic government, which led to the appalling violent period that lasted nearly four decades and included six hundred massacres in indigenous communities, a campaign the United Nations ruled to be genocidal. Such documents as the CIA’s “A Plan of Assassination” showed how they compiled lists of Guatemalans “to eliminate immediately in the event of a successful anti-communist coup.”More contemporary problems, such as the influx of drugs and proliferation of gangs, are chronicled in “The Untouchable Narco-State”, in which the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala told the Associated Press that 75% of the cocaine that reached American soil passes through this Central American nation. Despite this very dismal reality, the Reader includes poems, songs, plays, jokes, novels, short stories, recipes, art, and photographs that capture the diversity of everyday life in Guatemala. Oh My, Oh My!!! First let me say that Author Tara McClary Reeves in my opinion is one outstanding author.This is an amazing story of a little girl and her feelings about her dad. And the perspective of this book is one that not only helps her but others around her. The synopsis gives a great description, so I am not going to give one of my own. Instead, I am going to recommend it to all the military families, as well as to all the schools. It might seem a little off to mention it for schools, but think of how many of our kids have parents or other family members that serve? And teachers some times have to care for them. They sometimes see more than the family might see due to them not realizing how to talk or show their feelings so it can show in their behavior. This story gives us some ideas not only for the little girl and her father, but also for her mom, and how things affected her as well.So for the reasons above I will be giving this book a Breath of Life rating of: Five Clock Rating!!!!Disclosure: I did receive the above book in exchange for my honest opinion and orreview. Kindergarten-Grade 3. Since Punia's father was eaten by sharks while fishing, the boy and his mother have subsisted on yams and poi instead of lobster. One day while Punia stares longingly at the cave where the lobsters live, he sees the sharks sleeping and gets an idea. As they swim toward a big rock he has thrown in the water, Punia dives into the cove and snatches several lobsters. This is only the first of several, even more complicated tricks that he dreams up until he banishes the sharks forever from his cove. Wardlaw's adaptation of a traditional Hawaiian trickster tale has an added element of nail-biting suspense, for in playing his final trick Punia becomes a bit too bold and almost ends up in the shark king's belly. Of course, his quick wits save him in the end, and peace is restored to Hawaiian waters and lobster meat to Punia's table. Davalos evokes the lush setting of a tropical island with his richly colored illustrations. The layout is nicely balanced throughout the book to carry the story forward and underscore its drama. Great book for my grandson.

A favorite book. Elementary school aged boys love this book. So glad to have my own copy. Shipped quickly.

We have been looking for this book and were completely satisfied by the product received. It is a favorite story and now we have our own copy to enjoy.

The book was ordered and it came in just a few days in great conditions. I am extreamly satisfied with this purchace. This book is a wonderful tool and can be incorporated into many types of literacy centers.

I have never enjoyed being int he ocean with sharks. I respect that the ocean is their home but when sharks decide to hoard all of the loot beneath the sea, I am on Punia's side.This is fun tall tale about the King of Sharks who guards the lobster cave along with his followers. This book is an unneeded update to a beautiful classic. Do yourself a favor and don't buy this version of the adventures of Punia. Instead get the 1964 edition, with text by Beverly Mohan and illustrations by Don Bolognese (Amazon lists several used copies for sale). Both the drawings and the writing of the original make this new, "improved" version pale by comparison. To see what I mean, just consider how the two versions initially describe the shark king (otherwise known as King Kaialeale or King Kai for short) and Punia:King Kai:Original (Mohan ed.): "Long ago, in the cold waters of a bay near Kohala on the island of Hawaii, there lived a great shark king called Kaialeale. He was the king of the sharks, and there were ten sharks under him. In the bay, among the rocks and waving strands of seaweed, there was a cave full of lobsters, and this was where King Kaialeale had his palace. When the king was hungry, he just helped himself to a delicious lobster, so the cave was a very good arrangement for him and for the ten sharks under him. The only food they like better than lobster for dinner was an unwary swimmer or fisherman who dared to come into the bay."New edition (Wardlaw ed.): "Beneath the rippling island water, near the shadows of a cave, lurked ten great sharks and the shark king who ruled them. The sharks never swam far from shore, for the cave was filled with fat lobsters red as sunset, sweet as coconut. 'We must keep these lobsters for ourselves,' said the King of Sharks, 'and guard this cave from fishermen.' And so they did, devouring anyone who ventured into the sea."The original has a drawing of a bay; no sharks are visible but there are some indistinct, dark shapes in the shadows that just might be sharks or perhaps are just places where the water is deep. In the new edition, everything is explained up front for the reader: Punia's father was eaten by sharks, he and his mother "only" have yams and some bland poi to eat.It's truly difficult to see why someone would think that Mohan's words and Bolognese's drawings needed to be updated or improved. This new edition fails on both fronts. If you want poetry, beautiful drawings, and a moving story, buy the Mohan edition; you won't regret it.

For dinner every night, Punia and the rest of the villagers have to eat the same old thing because the sharks do not let them fish or catch lobster near the lobster caves under the water. These greedy sharks guard the lobsters and keep them for themselves. They even ate Punia's father when he tried to catch lobsters for their dinner! Now Punia is sick of eating poi everyday, so he hatches a plan to trick the sharks and catch some lobsters.This story is illustrated with vibrant colors that reflect the beauty of Hawaii and the surrounding ocean waters. Punia must brave these waters every time he attempts to catch the lobsters. He is a very clever boy and his plans to trick the sharks become more and more elaborate as the sharks and the shark king begin to catch on. Would you be afraid if you were underneath the water, inches from nearly a dozen giant sharks, and the only thing keeping them from eating you was your own clever plan? One of Punia's plans was to feed the sharks some thick poi, which when eaten by the sharks, would glue their mouths shut for a short amount of time. Even with their mouths glued shut, I don't think I could swim by eleven man-eating sharks! Could you?
