I was looking for a book that shared customs and culture, and this book is it! I read the whole thing in 24 hours (yes, I'm getting ready to go to Botswana). But I do wonder about the October 2010 advertised publishing date. The book shows the copyright as 2007, and doesn't mention any update for 2010. So my question is, now that we are in 2014, does that mean this book is coming from a perspective that is 7 years old?? If it is, why the advertised 2010 date? What is its significance?
This book was informative, although there were too many generalities such as older people being more conservative than the younger generation. We are left with a positive view of the country and it makes one want to learn more. I was surprised that essentially no mention was made of Sir Seretse Khama, the father of the country. A list of recommended readings on Botswana would be a great addition.
This was a very helpful guide to local manners and protocols. Technology information is not up to date but this is hardly surprising.
I bought this guide before going on Safari in Botswana. Although I wasn't going to be spending time in any towns or villages, I always like to know a bit about the culture of the people I will be visiting. This book was fantastic! It not only gave a great history of the country, but it offered simple phrases in the native language. I used a few phrases throughout my stay and loved the happy reaction of the locals I was speaking with both at the airport and and camp.
Having traveled extensively, I never thought about learning the cultural intricacies of a country before visiting. The concept seems to obvious, but I've never seen a book like this. I'm going to Botswana in a few months am so glad to happen upon the terrific book. Concise, detailed and accessible. Will always read Culture Smart guides before all future travel.
This is a short book which gives the reader a good understanding of Botswana. I recommend it.
I bought this small introduction to Botswana culture before taking a 13-day safari. It's a quick and easy read but didn't go beyond what I already knew from Botswana informative sites online. If you haven't gone online and want a one-stop capsule summary, this book would serve. I would have appreciated a more detailed primer on basic Setswana for the few commonly needed phrases I could use to be polite.
This book gave great insights into the history and condition of Botswana, a unique African country.
